LETTER OF ALBERTO REGUERA FOR OSCAR ALONSO MOLINA. Madrid, 9 of July of 2005 Dear Oscar: I wanted to speak to you of this new one man show at Paris, that contains up of 16 pieces of small and medium format. Already a year ago, I presented in Madrid an one man exhibition where i put much emphasis in the lateral sides of the picture. Not only like mere streching of those atmospheric visions (the sides of the sky) but like snapshots that cut the painted air and they offer the guts to us of the picture. For that reason, from now on, the picture will not be only one abstraction of a romantic landscape; now one becomes an object in himself. They take another dimension: transparents cubes full of floating pigments or lights that travel. The work "dissects" the moment of the cut and the spectator observes that of his sides over flow and excels "the cream of the painting". They are a material dissection where we observed all those pictorial entrails. The cut lets see the superposed transparencies and colors to us, as if it was "milhoja" cut with sharpened knife. And the titles of this sample make reference to this: "Univers tranchés" (2004), or "Atmosphéres incandescents in disection" (2004). Then not only the matter is cut, also the air. We have catched in an imaginary bucket an atmosphere piece. P.ej. in "Matiéres in gravitation" (2004), or in "Les Chemis dans l'air" (2004) Aerial visions or celestial fragments whose sides show the superpositions to us of transparencies. But one of the intentions of this work is that, in spite of emphasizing in the relation matter - object that has settled down, does not lose neither the plastic language either characteristic of the painter nor its content. That that romantic spirit and on attempt of poetic evocación stays. P.ej., "Turbulences dans l'aube" (2004). That it is continued maintaining the idea to continue creating spaces of lights and colors in balance. Harmony combined with depth sensations. The fact that in these new pieces - and given to the volume the central plane of the picture the wall does not have left patch, increases the depth sensation. That is what observes the visitor, who as it moves, will be been with new elements. For that reason it is very important how the piece in ele is located or hung expositivo space. The spectator will be with a different picture according to from what point of view is located. To this it is necessary to add, that in some of these matéricos buckets, its greater point of plastic tension does not have why to locate itself in the central plane of the picture. It is the case of "Lueurs" (2004), where a red luminosity puts off center the attention center towards one of the sides of the picture. For that reason it is clear that the space will condition the assembly of these works (soon we will return on this). The works are painted to both sides. But what happens with above and under these pictorial dates? In "Dreapping dans peintre-objet" (2004) the matter is condensed and flowed in his "down". "Down" that is above because the picture is necessary to hang it very high, almost in the ceiling, for which it watches observes well what happens in the piece. The eye of the spectator, of this form, would have to stay dynamic (that is my intention) as it moves in the expositivo space. And thus we return on the subject of the space. We spoke in this sample of the relation pictorial matter and object, but I would add to the term space. Because these pieces I am going to install them (since they have a base of 15 and 14 cm) in the ground, forming different combinations, whose result tries to be a chromatic composition between whose pieces the spectator can take a walk. Verifying that continues being pictures, but installed in the ground. It can see therefore the beam and envés of the painting. The frame and the painted part. Another proximity with the work. And to state that from the painting, and without leaving it, they are possible to be reaching other experience plastic. With one more an opened glance, they will perceive of another form the pictorial, customary object to see hung it on the wall. At the same time, they can make a sweeping visual of the set of pieces, as if they flew over strange elements. And depending on the angle and it distances, will be able more or less to observe bird's eye view the colors that crown the head of the picture. Work
sets that can work like a single harmonic snapshot, but ephemeral, that
dismounts. And for that reason it is the photo, that also will be a work
in himself. For the exhibition some photos go. Two which they reflect
these experiences and that show these "family" of pictorial
objects are titled "Instanténeas cromáticasI and II",
with a edition of 5 units and a format of 21x25cm. They are other photos
that reflect these experiences and that also will appear reproduced in
the catalogue, also of 5 units of 21x25 cm. (These photos will not be
exposed; they only will be shows, to not disturb the assembly of the exhibition
of these "peintures-objet".
"Ensamblajes románticos" (2004), o "Momentáneas agrupaciones matéricas" (2004), o "Volúmenes pictóricos" (2004), are some of titles of these photos that reflects expressions ephemeral (ephemeral in the sense which, in this case, soon it dismounts), where it is going away to even see that some of these chromatic structures use not even as pieces that - some of them will be in the sample. Or one uses as those wide frames that are objects but without painting, with the virgin canvas. I believe that I try, in this exhibition, to explore the relation that exists between the pictorial matter, the object in himself, and its location in the space. I would like to take advantage of all his possibilities and combinations. To glimpse new ways from a different glance towards the painting. With a strong hug, he salutes to you, Alberto
Reguera. LETTER DE OSCAR ALONSO MOLINA FOR ALBERTO REGUERA. Madrid, 10-31 July, 2005 Dear Alberto: Thanks for your precise one and detailed information. With her almost I have been able to make the complete virtual trip by that definitive assembly in the Parisian gallery that, I am afraid, I will not be able to go to see live. How much i regret ..., although I have left the consolation from the last visit to your study makes few days, when together composed and recomposed the possible adjustments between the dispersed pieces on the immaculate white ground, or we little hung them in the wall less than to the evenness of the ceiling, looking for the harmonious resistances the more, rates and cadences, the pregnantes encounter. While, we imagined the changing final aspect in the exhibition hall of those bodies yours of ignition color who, suddenly, have decided to emancipate themselves of so many and so many old usanzas of the traditional painting, and the yours own one: like the effect of window opened in the wall, or even the idea of maps contemplated after her; the own two-dimensionality of the pictorial thing, its tense planitud; the minimum thickness of the image; the point of view privileged of the Prince... I
wonder myself what will have happened in the biography of your recent
painting so that, as soon as without warning, all those certainties, and
the fluid handlings that with them you had obtained - almost virtuosity
-, they have been put at issue now and you begin to review them with as
much rigor as zeal, with the hope, you said to me there, to request to
him more to your work. It is a effort that, when suspecting the enormous
energies goes to demand to carry out it to you, I confess it, admires
to me you confront like supplement in the artistic maturity. But, like
you yourself, I do not want to lose the confidence that you will then
leave victorious, as also we know both, this is one of dynamic the more
terrible and intimate ones of all convincing artistic project: to devour
inexorably to all those on which prey does, and that, in your case, allows
to augur the own survival like another body. To be consumed in becoming
of the work - to even finish devoured by her to be able to transform it;
to naturalize the progressions of the own thing in the creative act, to
cannibalize them, to already be able to be artist still, although another
different one. To say it under the ascending one of now so insulted Clement
Greenberg, whose shade, nevertheless, I believe that you will see make
the rounds in more than an occasion in these lines, resemblance refundación
of your painting is the necessary premise for its own perfectibility:
as soon as that to reach a "style" implies, largely, to break
away from the enemy with the formal tensions from which it arose. You
make a lot of, and you do it well, when preferring to work with other
unpublished problems than to past well-known and tried solutions. With
facility you will be able to do yours here that lucid conscience of Edmond
Jabés when he assured: "in the dialogue that I try, the answer
is abolished; but, sometimes, the question is the fulgor of the replaced
one." So, hopefully you continue your long trajectory time and, meanwhile,
if it is achieving some success in the middle of your plastic puzzles,
better.
We
are going to think now together, dear Alberto, some conceptual limits
of whichever you taught in the study that morning to me. For example,
all your astute distortion of many budgets characteristic of the most
ambitious painting of the high modernismo - the Grand Style, that said
in the Fifties, the North American critic forehead to the arc tightened
by Rothko and Pollock, or between this one last one and De Kooning -,
to only continue maintaining a so expensive model the formalista theory,
that with other means and naturalizing, in addition, great part of its
paradoxes and restrictions. As it happens with that mythical flatness
greenbergiano that, on the other hand, your work never has wanted to assume
completely without repairs. The continuous one to fall back of the surfaces
in your work, by means of the built the framework for falsified one of
optical textures, as soon as announced in the material organization of
the picture, or the vivid pigment sweepings without aglutinante, or the
imperfect mixtures between greasy and thin, they cause continuous references
to the extreme glance, effects "micro" and "macro",
in a estraboscopia that forces the glance to oscillate the appreciation
of its distance with respect to the plane of the picture: of the organic
weave, with its fibers and components, at sight aerial, or the images
taken from a satellite; of scabs, flowed or internal humors, to magmas,
fumarolas, gas clouds of a cosmic vision that surpasses any human measurement.
Between both, it reduces hypervisible the own material organization of
the support, his physical limits and events... what greater evidence to
be before a certain body? By the way, which he is this same one to wrinkle
itself of continuous the plane of the picture in a scene of changing scales,
the person in charge, in the end, to maintain also your scenes peculiarly
equidistant of the abstraction and the figuration; or otherwise: distanced
of any reasonable reminiscencia to the landscape the same (in line with
the theories of Rosenblum about the nordic inheritance barking in the
bottoms of the abstract expresionism), that of the pure absorption of
the work in its formatividad, fundamental materiality or plastic elements
(informal, material art).
Impure,
then, according to the rules of that orthodox modernity, your painting
tastes now, in addition, the taste of the theater thing (theatricality)
in the most literal sense of the word, and is postulated within a redefined
abstraction, trhoug the question of its position to discipline. For a
moment I imagine amused the disagreement of somebody as Michel Fried before
the evidence of which his distilled ideas on the absorption and theatricality
could have a completely unexpected application in that extrañamiento
of the abstraction that implies a reading of your recent painting like
escenográfica image. The construction of such "little theates"
is an element more than a baroque style, I am conceited that unstoppable
in your future work, as soon as metalanguaje analysis of the conditions
of appearance of the own work in a neutral conceptual context; that same
that - at the moment - you prefer not to question, but in my opinion it
would open inestimables routes to you at this precise moment. Thus, walking
between your boxes, opened behind -"without back", as terrorífic
and hallucinatorily our brilliant Luis Gordillo said to see itself sometimes
-, more still reinforces the air of imperative frontalidad with margins,
to the average way of them reliefs, who forces points of view in damage
of others, but without condemning no, nor to the eye to be a specular
image of the flight point, as it happens in the albertiana perspective.
I remember how in the study, between the frames that maintained of foot
thanks to their thickness increased in the last stages of your trajectory,
you very seemed satisfied before that lost one with fixedness of the plane
made up of the sum of dispersed parts; but, mainly, to me it has remained
recorded your insistence and enthusiasm before the inconstante, variable
fact of the visual experience that makes possible the hypothetical plane
of that total work, disperses now by the exhibition space, and of which
never we will see its wounds completely sutured, between of the boxes.
Triple
discontuinidad, then, of plane of picture like unit (another old myth
of the modernismo that you have decided to leave back), but also of its
fenomenológica experience: in the first place, the privileged surface
is opened to the three-dimensional object when it runs by the lateral
ones of the painted dices and embrace its volume (Barbara Rose defined
this conquest at its moment like crucial, with something of exageración,
I think); in second, these same boxes articulate an only imaginary continuum
that the spectator is forced to cross to receive - there are the third
interval- to each step here, is a different frame. By the way, that to
the circulate between average of your installation of picture, our eye,
no matter how much it try, never can occupy with exactitude the plane
of anyone of those unit, opaque, that have turn in the point blind of
the work (that drop of darkness, in the beautifull expression of Celán);
something as well as the connection point of a primitive composed eye,
so the one of some insects, that a polyhedral image, faceted offers like
result (analytical cubism) formed from a series of lunches fragmentary
that is overlapped to each other.
Alberto, do you also perceive in everything what I tell to you, a minimum of coolness towards the love to the fruit of the work that occurs in more recent yours, and calls so much the attention to me in your particular case? Bachelard would recommend to be specially kind to an indication like this, as soon as that it always indicates an origin. I believe that, briefly, you are learning to distanciarte, to despegarte; you retire to try to see better, now than you have finished off the plane of your painting, and you know it very well. You propose a new type of improvement, and perfectibility, even. It is left a shade important to clarify: when I speak of spacing I think, mainly, in a slope of emotional temperature in the end, and only in the end - I wait for -, of the process of construction of the work; certain reservation conceptual, but never ironic (Witz), which it is reinforced to amalgamate the practice of the painting with other aspects that affect their perimeter, conceptual or physical, more than to his context, as it aimed to you above; that is to say, and to put some examples easy to verify: the development of the thickness of the frame; the continuity of the edge on the wide one; raising its exhibition within boxes or display cabinets that, as a palimpsest, superpose the brightness to the surface without being able to avoid; the increasing complexity of the margin to discipline - objet like making, frames grouped as a sculpture of round bulk, photographic index of the ephemeral construction, and so.-."To request more to the painting." Thus I summarized when beginning this letter your confesos efforts to enter it in confused territories every day more than, in its case, they pass without exception through the contamination and the mixture; unfortunately, with too much frequency, also by the mixtificación. Of any way, I am safe, it will not be because subjects that the very old doctrine of the painting cannot still be maintained like until today, with equal intensity and complexity, but rather that, for you, she becomes now with unusual o'clock departure rapidity for a fraseo that the taking more like pretext, or perhaps noncentral argument of its evocación, but never anecdote. At sight it is that your pictures have stopped being mere receiver given beforehand for their deposit; but they are not elevated either, since it had inhaled the pure formal breath, in open field whose unit is necessary to allow so that it emerges, instead of imposing it or forcing it. What stranger and exciting moment in your trajectory, Alberto. For that reason same: strong, and consérvate good. Óscar Alonso Molina |
LETTRE D'ALBERTO REGUERA POUR OSCAR ALONSO MOLINA. Madrid, le 9 juillet 2005
Cependant,
et finir même avalé par elle - pour pouvoir la transformer ;
mieux.
Nous
allons maintenant, mon cher Alberto, examiner ensemble certaines limites
ton œuvre d’ailleurs n’a jamais souhaité endosser
