ALBERTO REGUERA'S ONE MAN TRAVELLING EXHIBITION.

VALLADOLID: Monasterio Nª Señora del Prado, 2 - 25 septiembre 2005

Junta Castilla y León. León (18/1-20/2). Segovia (3/3-3/4). Zamora (5/5-5/6). Valladolid (2/9-25/9)

This exhibition is reproduced in a catalogue published by the "Junta de Castilla y León", in Spain. This catalogue has two parts: the first speech of the evolution of the work of the artist in the last 20 years. The second part is centered in paintings made between years 2000 and 2004. To this second part belongs most of the pictures of this exhibition. About 30 paintings are exposed, although it is a variable number depending on the conditions of each room. But we can count on 10 or 12 pieces of 200 x 200 cm. (79 x79 inches). The great formats, all of them together ones in a same room, create a climate whose velvet atmospheres and textures are surrounding the spectator. This one is observing the series of great works like a great sequence, where the colors and the spaces of these works vibrate and they interrelate. We found to 5 medium formats of 150 x 150 cm (59 x 59 inches) and other ten pictures of 100 x 100 cm (39.5 x 39.5 inches). Finally we can contemplate to some small formats of 50 x 50 cm (19.75 x 19.75 inches), and that supposes small visual impacts that, sometimes, they serve to balance the exhibition. All the works are acrylic on canvas, with pure pigment, in which it uses the technique of superposition of layers and "frottages". They are works where the matter and the color have protagonism. The last painting layer usually is a pure pigment layer to create textures of velvet. These "Abstract Landscapes" sometimes are ended metallic pigments, that play with the subject of the reflections and the light.

This traveling exhibition began in May of 2004 and will probably finish in April-May of 2004 and crosses diverse museums and Spanish capitals. With this writing, associate some of the pictures that will be now available for the exhibition and that are probable that almost all they are it also for a future exhibition of these characteristics.

ALBERTO REGUERA: EXPLORATION / EVOLUTION.

(Text by Rex Weil, from the catalogue of tuis show.)

Over Alberto Reguera has demonstrated consistency, innovation, a quick painterly intelligence and a thorough grounding in tradition. It is now possible to talk about Reguera’s style in the fullest, most resonant sense of the word . the evolution of Alberto Reguera’s achievement merits a close examination.

My first exposure to Reguera’s work was in Washington, DC at Gallery K in 1998. They had been so impressed with their visit to Reguera’s studio that they immediately organized a show at Gallery K to introduce the artist to American audiences.

The last five years have seen a further amplification in the confidence of Reguera’s work This efflorescence In the sumptuous Floating Lights In Spiritual nightfall (2000), the artist brings together all of his previous craft and insight to produce a deep, brooding bloody red surface, echoed in an impenetrable black reflection, with the light of dawn edging in from the sides.

Recent canvases also demonstrate Reguera’s virtuosity with scale. (2000), Reguera dematerializes his subject matter almost completely over a large expanse of canvas without sacrificing the intensity he has achieved in smaller formats. In the last several years, he has continued to work productively with larger and lager formats. unfolding The artist has also incorporated new mirror effects and metallic paints in recent works. reflected by a similar black movement in the bottom half.

The “windows” from Reguera’s early paintings have been thrust back into the viewer’s space – they are now implicit, assumed and incorporated into the viewer’s practice. Reguera’s canvases are a joyous celebration of mind and experience, of the phisic act of paint. With his relentless experimentation within “the constraints of style,” Reguera’s explorations continue to evolve.
